| Divine Intervention For Longbridge.
The motoring world was still in shock last night as news broke that the former Rover plant at Longbridge, Birmingham, is to be used for car manufacture once again.
A consortium, thought to be headed up by the British based company Autoshite, has put together an audacious proposal to manufacture a new range of "Popemobile" based vehicles at the Longbridge plant. They are expected to be marketed as the Autoshite "Vatican" range. Sources close to the consortium have hinted that the cars will be badged as various former British Leyland marques.
It is stated that entry-level models will be badged as the Austin Cardinal and Morris Diocese; Mid-range models will be sold as the Riley Pontiff, whilst for the space conscious there will be the Austin Parrish Council Estate. The luxury market is to be catered for by the Wolseley Monarch, whilst topping the range will be the Wolseley Papal Mk 1 "Popematic". The sporty end of the range is likely to be badged as the M.G. Cleric.
This news will come as a welcome relief to the West Midlands economy, which earlier in the year saw the collapse of the Rover Group and the subsequent closure of Longbridge with the loss of eleven thousand jobs.
Inside sources close to Autoshite last night were quoted as saying:
“God only knows where Autoshite have got hold of that kind of money and to be honest with you I’d rather not know.”
Autoshite last night were unavailable for comment. | |
